Recently Hangzhou Water Treatment's 10,000-ton membrane desalination unit design and system integration technology has won the first prize of 2016 Hangzhou Science & Technology Progress Award.
The award is set up to mobilize science workers to make innovations and translate research results into economic and social benefits. This year, the award was granted to 80 out of 221 candidate projects and Hangzhou Water Treatment was the only award winner in the water treatment industry.
China used to rely on imports for core equipment of desalination projects until 2000 when Hangzhou Water Treatment successfully developed a 1,000 ton desalination project with policy support. The award-winning technology is a proprietary technology and has been applied on Liuheng Island, Zhoushan, solving problems such as uneven water allocation and high energy consumption of large-sized facilities, reducing the hydroelectricity consumption per ton from 7kwh in 1997 to 2.6kwh of the present day, and generating enormous economic benefits. In addition, it uses creative membrane materials with world-advanced proprietary membrane elements claiming the desalinization ratio up to 99.8%.
So far it has been applied to major desalinization projects in Caofeidian, Hebei and Haiyang, Shandong, grabbing more than 60% of the domestic market; some of its equipment is exported to 10 foreign countries including Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, generating a considerable source of income.
