China’s First Hydrogen Energy International Standard Announced

(Correspondent: Guo Zhijun) Recently, Safety of Pressure Swing Adsorption Systems for Hydrogen Separation and Purification, an international standard developed by ISO/TC 197/WG17 and complied by Tianyi Science & Technology and other companies, was announced globally by the ISO as a Technical Specification (TS), with the standard number of ISO/TS 19883: 2017. The TS is the first international standard for hydrogen technologies developed by China, and its announcement indicates that China has made great breakthroughs in the international standardization of hydrogen energy technologies.

As the lead company, Tianyi Science & Technology drafted and compiled the TS and served as a convener. Meanwhile, coordinated by the Secretariat of SAC/TC 309 and China National Institute of Standardization, experts from over 30 member units of SAC/TC 309 took part in the preparation for the TS and gave strong supports to its improvement.

The company had begun to take a lead in conducting researches on and carrying out engineering development of the technology in the early 1980s. After over 40 years of efforts, the company has improved the technology greatly and made it reach the international advanced level, and set up over 1,000 sets of pressure swing adsorption systems for hydrogen separation and purification at both home and abroad. On this basis, the company, on the behalf of China, filed officially an application to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for registration of the TS, which was approved by the representatives of 12 member countries of the ISO via voting to establish a work group for compilation. The work group is composed of 29 experts from eight countries including the United States, French, Germany, Japan and Canada, etc. The compilation of the TS took nearly five years and underwent five stages including proposal, drafting, solicitation for opinions, review and approval by ISO.

Hydrogen purification is the most extensive and mature application of the pressure swing absorption technology. The announcement of the TS will spur all countries in the world to reach a consensus on the TS, break relevant trade barriers, accelerate its global application and promotion, enhance the quality, market competitiveness and international influence of pressure swing adsorption systems for hydrogen separation and purification of the company and China, and lay a solid foundation for making more achievements of the industry to go global and integrate into the global industrial chain.
